Evaluation

Overall, I feel the project has been a success. I have researched into how to visually retell stories that were intended to be consumed orally or through written word and have created outcomes which visually retell stories in a modern day setting. My illustrations tackle the issues that come with social media by highlighting negative scenarios it can cause. I am happy with the way I have answered the brief in conceptual and technical terms. I feel I have answered the brief in an interesting and thought provoking way which I aimed to reflect the time and culture we are in (similar to old fairytales) and teach lessons to viewers about the problems which social media can cause (similar to the lessons taught in old fairytales too). My outcomes reflect the research I have gathered throughout the project and reveal my insights, revelations and findings of the topic. Not only have I learnt a lot about our growing unhealthy consumption of social media today, I myself have become more aware of my own social media intake and feel more strongly about the negative impact it can have. I feel the impacts social media can have on one’s mental health and social interactions needs to be addressed more. Young adults need to be more aware of their intake and think about what implications it is having on their lives. Therefore, I am happy with my subject matter because it is something I believe in and want to create awareness for.

When I started the project I thought I had a clear idea of exactly what I wanted to achieve, I thought I would create a social commentary about the way we use social media through illustrations. At the start, I thought I would create eight illustrations using a minimal colour palette and thought they would be all created by hand but in the end I created five much more modernised, detailed and coloured pieces with stronger concepts and heavily using Photoshop. I have never spent as long on digital programmes to create my illustrations before I did this project, I spent a lot of time playing around with composition, colours and scaling on Photoshop. In the end, I was pleased with the journey and processes my project went through to create my final outcomes.

In my outcomes I created a variety of different perspectives, retelling each fairytale from either the perspective of the main character, from a third party perspective or from the perspective of a different character from the original story. This has allowed me to retell the tales in a range of different ways, focusing particularly on the subject matter of social media. I feel these different perspectives and how I have modernised each fairytale make my illustrations more interesting. I visually retold each fairytale as if they were occurring now, this made the illustrations more comical, relevant and relatable to the audience. For example, Pinocchio as Donald Trump tackles current affairs in political news and makes viewers consider Trump as an alternative character which I hope will be thought provoking and entertaining.

After lots of rough sketching, observational drawing, developing ideas in my sketchbook and experimenting with mediums – I began to problem solve each of my fairytales thinking about the concept behind each fairytale, how I was going to successfully portray them and in what illustrative ways would I do so. Playing with different mediums in my sketchbook allowed me to gain a visual language which I could then translate into my final outcomes. I used a range of traditional mediums in my development and final illustrations such as watercolour, wax crayon, ink, collage, fine liner, pencil, pencil crayon and acrylic paint. I then used Photoshop and digital painting on my Wacom tablet to finalise my outcomes, playing around with scale, colour and composition. I particularly enjoy this way of working using traditional and digital methods, this project in particular has allowed me to see how I work best as an illustrator and helped me develop my way of working which ultimately helps improve my practice. In my opinion, the most successful areas of this project have been the concepts behind the fairytales and the mixed media illustrative approach I have taken to create my outcomes. I feel using combining digital and traditional methods of illustration helps harness the best out of my work and I will continue to practise improving these skills.

This project has been a great lesson for me to practise my editorial illustrations and helped me learn how to convey a narrative through a single illustration. It has improved my image making abilities and made me realise what type of illustration I do and don’t like doing more. Although I thoroughly enjoyed

creating my first editorial illustrations, retelling old stories, playing with different mediums and incorporating text into my work, I think in future I will avoid retelling more children’s stories. In future, I would like to tell my own story, visualising it and character developing with no past influences. I needed my illustrations to be recognisable to the viewer as I was retelling stories, I achieved this through colours, type and conveying the characters themselves However, I found I didn’t want to depict the characters faces like the old Disney characters but equally I didn’t want to recreate their faces to be someone completely different. Therefore, I excluded the majority of the facial features. The facial features I included were enough to retell my stories and get my message across though, they also allowed the viewer to imagine what face they would like.

I wanted each of my illustrations to be teaming with intricate detail, allowing the viewer to discover new elements and textures in each illustration as they looked more closely. I wanted each illustration to work as a final image but also work when the viewer zoomed into certain areas. Using small details and a range of interesting textures I feel i achieved this, this is one of the main things I am happy with about this project.

In terms of considering what I would do differently, I might change my figurative style to be less naive but ultimately I think instead of focusing on how I would change it I would focus more on how I could expand it. I think in future for this project I might retell more fairytales and create a larger series of them. Or I might focus on one fairytale and make it more of a story showing narrative about social media in a modern day setting through either a comical book or short children’s book.

Considering where I would take this future, I want to approach magazines, newspapers and online platforms next in the hope they will show my work. Either by using my illustrations in a social media article of their own, or featuring me as an illustrator and talking about me and my work in particular. Some places in particular I hope to approach are Gurl-Talk, G-IRLS, Colossal and Bored Panda. For post graduation development, I hope that through this project I will get the chance to create more editorial work which will be published.

This work fits into my wider practise as I feel I now have a broader understanding of what it takes to create a successful editorial illustration, something I had never tried before. I feel my eye for composition has improved and through trial and error I am more able to recognise when elements aren’t working and what ways to better them. This project has allowed me to obtain work which is different from some of my past pieces, this in turn has helped me broaden my portfolio. As well as this, I feel my illustrative style has developed, I am able to be more critical of myself and my confidence in digital illustration has grown. My digital skills were something I aimed to improve before even starting this course as at the beginning of this course my digital skills were almost non-existent. Playing around with each illustration’s composition, scale and colour using digital programmes was a key exercise which helped improve my personal development.

Going into the next project, I will continue to use and improve my mixed media illustrative style, getting involved more into collage and using different materials within my work. I will also be delving into a different way illustration is used, this time I will be focusing on packaging design and making my own templates to create 3D illustrations for the first time.

This project has made me realise what is particularly crucial to the way I work is to create a library of imagery which I then develop and use to create my finished outcomes. The start of my illustrations for this project were just as important as the last, this is something I’ll be sure to keep in mind for future projects. I am now able to acknowledge that what is especially important to me and my practise is to have both a personally fulfilling element to what I do as well as a connection to my audience, creating work which people can relate to and engage with to find meaning from.

Donald Trump Elements

When I put my illustrations together I started with the image below as the finished outcome. Althought I liked the idea of the wall and the composition was working well for me there were a few things which needed altering. I made the table legs black to balance the other black in the image and created a wooden flooring and striped wallpaper, this added more detail and made the image more interesting. I then tried playing with colour using hue and saturation, playing with the idea that the image would potentially be black and white too. I tried placing in a window as well to give more of an idea about the room Trump was in but it didn’t add anything so I replaced it with more posters to reinforce the image of Trump. I didn’t want to depict Trump in the oval office or superior but wanted him to seen normal and almost obsessed in a very modest room surrounded by motivation sayings and things to big up his ego.

For my Pinocchio fairytale I am going to imagine Pinochio in modern day life as Donald Trump. Trump is known for his twitter rants and the constant promises and statements he makes on it, he is the only president to keep his own twitter account and still post on it every  day during his presidency.

He has only 7 million followers on Twitter with the majority of them being his supporters. In my fairytale, I want to poke fun at this idea – that he only won his election because he was hidden behind his computer screen ranting and promising on twitter so no one could see his nose growing bigger with all the lies he was telling, that his promises weren’t in fact promises at all.

Trump is nowadays always seen in his dark blue suit with a red tie and white shirt. His bright yellow hair and unnaturally tanned face has always been something the public have made fun of, he is almost a comical figure in that sense. These features were all something I wanted to include in my illustrations.

I didn’t want to display Pinocchio (Trump) in the Oval office but more of a plain room sat by his desk ranting on twitter with posters, pictures and slogans on the wall surrounding him – all things he loves/believes in/says etc. Almost like a Ego Wall, something he looks at whilst on his twitter rant which spurs him on to continue making empty promises and saying things he thinks his supporters would like to hear. I think making the rest of the space he is in quite plain would suit the illustration well, it would bring focus to the posters on the wall and make his ego look even bigger.

To begin, I started by drawing Trump himself and getting an idea of his facial features, his side profile and his hair. This I found much more entertaining than I thought I would.

I liked the collaged face as the brightness of the hair and his tanned face were depicted well using this medium, it adds nice texture to the illustration. I preferred the crayon suit instead of the watercolour one too because of the texture if gives.

screen-shot-2017-02-10-at-12-46-05

Next I started to draw and paint the desk and computer he would be using. I tried out different styles of furniture and mediums to see what worked best.

scan-124 scan-125 scan-126

After this, I started to create the elements which would go on the wall behind him. These would all be edited and coloured on Photoshop. I wanted these to take the piss out of Trump and humour the viewer.

To reinforce Trump and his controversial beliefs I wanted the background wall behind him to consist of posters and memorabilia which supported the type of person he is and his main political points. I wanted it to be very republican and self-absorbed with multiple framed photos of himself up on the wall surrounded by his favourite sayings and things. I hoped this would create more intricate detail within the illustration and entertain the viewer as they examined the different areas and be humoured with variety of messages.

Pinocchio is a bit different from my other illustrations as it focuses on a particular person rather than a social media action like the others, however I saw portraying Pinocchio as a politician as the most exciting way to retell the fairytale. I hoped illustrating Trump would make viewers smile and it would also be more fitting for modern day news. From his discriminative views and his adoration in Putin to his love for Mike Pence and his determination to make Mexico pay for a wall, I wanted to make fun of all of the things he so strongly believed in and took so seriously.

After college, he worked for his father’s company and convinced him to develop and expand real estate opportunities. According to Trump’s biography, his father often said, “everything my son touches seems to turn to gold.”

Trump graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business with a degree in Economics in 1968. He also attended Fordham University.

After getting into some trouble in grade school, Trump’s parents sent him to the New York Military Academy. Other graduates of NYMA include Francis Ford Coppola, Stephen Sondheim and John Gotti Jr.

Trump has never held a public office. He is the first president to be elected without a career stopover in government or the military.

At one point his building, the Trump World Tower, was the largest residential building in the world. It’s 90 stories high.

Trump once insulted former President Ronald Reagan in his 1987 book, “The Art of the Deal.”  He said “only now, nearly seven years later, are people beginning to question whether there’s anything beneath that smile.”

He was involved in the “birther” movement that questioned whether Barack Obama was born in the United States, though he acknowledged in September that the President was likely born here.

He is #405 on Forbes list of the world’s billionaires for 2015. Forbes reported his net worth is $4.1 billion. Trump stated the magazine was incorrect and that his actual net worth was $11.5 billion.

Trump is the first Republican president-elect to have put forward proposals on child care. He plans to allow families to deduct child care costs from their taxes and has proposed six weeks maternity leave for biological mothers.

Top priorities for Trump’s first 100 days in office include: limiting congressional terms, renegotiating NAFTA, repealing Obamacare and enacting a “multi-trillion dollar” tax cut.

Trump has frequently described global warming as a “hoax.” He plans to withdraw from the Paris Agreement and reconsider the EPA’s finding that carbon dioxide is a harmful pollutant.

Trump won as a Republican, but he has been affiliated with other political parties including the Reform Party (1999 to 2001), the Democratic Party (2001 to 2009) and the Independent Party (2011 to 2012).

He is currently married to Melania Trump, with whom he has one child (Barron, who is 10). The future First Lady is a former Slovenian model. Trump has four other children (Donald, Jr., Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany) from previous marriages.

Trump’s Main Points:

Trump announced his candidacy with the promise “to build a great, great wall on our southern border” and “have Mexico pay for that wall,” and has repeated the call with conviction and consistency.

A ban from Muslims entering the USA until he ‘figures out what is going on’.

“I am going to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (and) I’m going tell our NAFTA partners that I intend to immediately renegotiate the terms of that agreement to get a better deal for our workers”. He aims to reduce taxes and lower company regulations too.

Snow White Fairytale – From The Queen’s Perspective

Close ups:

After lots of rough sketches at the beginning of my project, I started with the idea of depicting a real Queen in a castle looking at her phone – this however didn’t take into account the idea of a modern day setting and it was an undeveloped idea. From this, I began to think about modernising the story and making the character a teenage ‘queen bee’. I played around with textures and colours for my final designs before deciding on a outcome, I thought the textured and patterns background added to the detail and character of the illustration.

Retold Fairytale: For Snow White’s fairytale I wanted to retell the story from a different perspective, the evil Queen’s. Today some young adults are obsessed with social media and as I spoke about earlier, dopamine is released everytime we get a like or a new follower and it makes us feel good. This has caused some social media users to have an obsession with how many likes and followers they are receiving. Bringing this back to Snow White in a modern day setting, I wanted to depict the Queen as being one of these obsessed social media users. She is teenage girl called ‘Queenie’, she is queen bee, she’s very popular and gets jealous or angry at anyone who she sees as a threat to her social media status. Instead of a mirror the Queen looks a iPhone to see who is the fairest in the land but to her anger she sees that it is not her but Snow White who has 8.3 million followers and is loved by all, this makes her envious and bitter which in the end as we know from the original fairytale, will be her ultimate downfall. This fairytale I hope will bring awareness that things like how many followers you have or how many likes you are getting doesn’t matter. Don’t worry about it as you don’t want to turn out like the evil Queen in Snow White – bitter, jealous and twisted.

I wanted to depict the Queen as a teenage girl in her bedroom, surrounded by posters like ‘keep calm and stay lush’ and photos of her and her friends – implying she is popular, the queen bee and likes it that way. As she looks an Snow White’s Instagram account and take in how many followers she has and how great her posts are, she gets jealous and annoyed  that she is more popular than her. I created the illustration around her make up dresser, reinforcing the idea that she is obsessed with beauty and vainity. Using watercolour, waxed crayon, fine liner and felt tip I experimented with mediums to find the right mediums I wanted to use. in my final illustration.

Little Mermaid Tests

The image below is the one I edited after my final tutorial. I toned down the sand, added grass and rocks to the beach, added shells, integrated her tail into the sea more and changed the composition of the sky/sea/earth. I think making there less sky makes the image more successful and I prefer the angle of the waves on the beach in this image.

The images below are the Little Mermaid attempts before my final tutorial. I tested the colours to see what would look best for my final illustration, I liked the original the best – blue sea and yellow sand.

In my final tutorial we talked about the composition alot, Luke said I didn’t need all the textures and to tone them down a little. And that the piece might look more interesting if it was divided into thirds instead of half – and I think it does make it look alot more visually interesting when divided into thirds. The arm holding the phone was also discussed as maybe being too high and I was suggested to add more visuals onto the beach by creating more rocks like the one she is sitting on.

The image below starts to incooperate text, however I think handwritten typography would look better and suit the illustration more so in my next attempt I will be playing around with that.

Little Mermaid

After sketching up different compositions for Little Mermaid’s illustration I started to draw all the elements which might go into the piece and test out different mediums, shapes for each element. From shells, to a lighthouse, to backgrounds and the Little Mermaid herself, using felt tip and watercolour I developed an array of visuals which I could then play with on Photoshop to create the final outcome.

From my last tutorial I knew I needed to create all the elements I was going to use and start to compose my final pieces together, I had done a lot of experimentation and tests with different mediums and now knew what mediums I wanted to use (watercolour, felt tip, pencil and collage), my next step was to start colour tests and playing with typography for each image.

Each image I imagine in a newspaper or magazine article about the ways in which we use social media, I hope to approach some magazines in the hope they might use my work. Each image would have a funny/dark tagline underneath it so explain what is happening in the image and add to the concept.

More Little Mermaid development with a lighthouse and rock tests for the Little Mermaid to be sitting on. I like the watercolour little mermaids the best, especially for the tail but I might try the watercolour tail and wax crayon red hair together.

Working on the background I played with the idea of creating a coast shoreline or having beach huts in the background, I created these using watercolour and felt tip. However, when dropped onto the illustration I found they didn’t add anything better to the image. Although I do like the beach hut paintings.

Hansel and Gretel Tests

I created a watercolour gingerbread town house to replace fine liner version which didn’t fit in as well, this one suits the rest of the image better.

This composition is my chosen one for the final crit after looking at it with Luke and other students in my final tutorial. I will make create handwritten typography to replace the Moon Flower font I am using at the moment, this will suit the illustration better I think.

Using Photoshop I started to compose the elements from my sketchbook together to test composition, colours and see which elements did/didn’t work together.

I started by using the black and white backgrounds I created in my sketchbook.

I then used my modern gingerbread town house with it being the only colour in the image thinking it might look good if the only colour element was the biggest focal point.

screen-shot-2017-01-25-at-10-52-21

I then tried a traditional gingerbread house in replacement with a collaged chimney smoke. I experimented with a border and a text element too but I thought the text would be best done by hand.

I also tried the border being rigid but I preferred the watercolour border inst

Next I thought about adding more colour into the image, starting with a green forest.

I overlay colour onto the pencil and watercolour people which I thought worked better, I think if I use this method I will colour all the people differently and make them all unique.

I played with putting the townhouse back into this composition, unsure of what worked better.

Fariytale Sketches

Quick sketches of the other fairytales I am thinking about creating. I think 7 (which was my original number) is quite a big push considering there is three weeks left until the final crit. I would rather do 3-4 really good and well researched pieces than 7 rushed ones. Quality not quantity!

(Refer back to see story ideas)

scan-104

The Little Mermaid trying to take a selfie with her tail cut out of it because after stalking all of the Prince’s exes online she comes to the realisation that the Prince only likes human girls.

scan-103

Hansel and Gretel

To start my work with Hansel and Gretel’s illustration I started by composing different potential scenes to try and visualise what worked and what didn’t.

The idea behind this fairytale is that Hansel posted a picture online of the gingerbread house which made it go viral and now there gatherings of people trying to take photos and selfies with the amazing gingerbread house as it is unlike anything else. And thus, the gingerbread house is spoilt by social media and the tons of people overcrowding it to get their perfect photo. It’s no hidden iced gem anymore!

scan-87scan-88

I then started creating imagery like the candy and gingerbread house which would go in the illustration. I played with ink, collage, pen, watercolour and pencil to test different mediums and see which ones I wanted to use. I really like the idea of creating a mixed media piece with inks, paints, collage and pencil.

I illustrated the iconic gingerbread house – a small quaint cottage covered in candy, and I also tested creating a normal house like a town house or semi-detached house with the idea I would use the clipping mask on Photoshop to drop candy into the house. This would give a modern twist on an old fairytale and make it more my own.

scan-89 scan-90  scan-91

scan-102 scan-101

Using ink, fine liner and pencil I started to draw and paint the people who would be present at the gingerbread house taking photos. They are all either taking selfies, group selfies, photos or couple photos with the gingerbread house.

I preferred the pencil people as they have more detail within them and I like the texture pencil creates.

scan-100 scan-99 scan-98 scan-97

As the gingerbread house is hidden away in a forest I started drawing trees from my local park to get an idea of what trees I would create within my forest. Using inks and fine liner I loosely painted a range of different trees which I intend on bringing into Photoshop and layer up together to create my forest background.

scan-96 scan-95 scan-94

I created these four background tests to get an idea of what style and mediums I wanted to go for. I really liked the rolling hills getting smaller as they got further away and I also liked the use of different mediums – acrylic and pencil for the hills and ink for the trees. As well as this I enjoyed the path and the non-uniformed trees.
